朱子的理氣論以理為現象事物的本體，氣是創生萬物的質料。心性論以性源於天地之理，為心的道德本體，心的活動應以性理為根據，以節制情感。因此，朱子的理氣論與心性論具有「本體先於現象」的傾向。受到理氣論與心性論的影響，朱子的詩文理論主張道是詩文的本體，詩文是道的表現形式，本體比形式重要，潛在「本體先於現象」的思想。

'Essence goes before phenomenon' is the concept of Metaphysics. Existentialism affirms the essence of people. The essence of people is not born determined. On the contrary, it is determined by oneself, consisting of self-choice and self-creation. There is also the concept 'Essence goes before phenomenon' in the philosophy of Zhu-Xi. The concept in the same time is revealed in his literary works, which influenced by his philosophy.
