Topologie Tainan is a project realized through joint cooperation between Les Gens d’Uterpan from France and Scarecrow Contemporary Dance Company from Taiwan. In this project, five dancers walk through their own separate predetermined routes in West Central District of Tainan city, twice a day from 17th to 26th July 2014. This is not a work of performing art performed outdoors, but an act of intervention. Topologie Tainan is a challenge to the frame and conventions of dance as a genre of performing art. It is also an intervention into certain public spaces in Tainan city. Illuminated through Henri Lefebvre’s perspectives of analyzing the production of space via spatial practice, representations of space, and representational spaces, the connotation of various public spaces in Tainan can be revealed by interpreting the act of intervention into the production of those public spaces, including Fort Provintia (Chihkan Tower), Tainan Municipal Gongyuan Elementary School campus, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store Tainan Zhongshan, Shuipingwen Park, Confucius Temple yard, streets, roundabouts, arcades, and alleys. Through the perspectives of an act of intervention, conventions of performing art practices, and the production of spaces in Tainan city, this research offers an interpretation of Topologie Tainan. In so doing hopes to unveil and respond to the designation and realization of Topologie Tainan, or the essential value of this act of intervention would otherwise be concealed in daily life and thus go unnoticed. |
