Under a culture context with high levels of personalism, differential leadership is regarded as a familiar leadership style in Chinese organizations. A differential leader, in a high power distance context, utilizes limited time and resources by assigning critical and emergent tasks to in-group members while allocating routine and supportive tasks to out-group members in order to favor those in-groups and inspire those out-groups. Consequently, differential leadership is believed to be fair and effective in Chinese context. The concept of differential treatments is also prevailing in sports teams. However, little is known about how differential leadership is performed in sports contexts. Thus, this article will discuss the theoretical foundation of differential leadership and power distance. We further propose the relationship between differential leadership of the coach and player performance in sports teams. |
