Based on theories and analytical frameworks of media representation and semiology, the current study examines 458 Hakka internet news stories retrieved from Google Alerts during March 12 to May 11, 2014. Content analysis and textual analysis are employed to inquire content categories including the news type, topic, source, report area, length, number of likes, number of hyperlinks, and Hakka image. Signification of the Hakka cultural symbols and the connotative meanings of the Hakka Tung Blossom festival represented and constructed in the news stories are analyzed and interpreted. Limitations of the current study and suggestions for the future research are provided. |
