This study aims to explore the sequential patterns of the online problem solving process, and further explores the differences between high- and low-performing teams. A total of 76 high school students participated, and sequential analysis was applied to analyze their behavioral patterns. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to further understand the perceptions of the participants. The results indicated that the high performing teams exhibited significant “Organizing and forming conclusions” in the process of online problem solving, while the low-performing teams displayed a significant sequence of “Propose, define, and clarify problem” to “Provide solutions or information for possible answers.” The interview data suggest several underlying reasons for the poor results of the low-performing teams including the fact that they were not used to taking part in online discussion activities. |
