This study compiled the Mechanisms of Moral Disengagement Scale proposed by Bandura et al. in 1996 to explore its applicability for Taiwanese students. We recruited 491 Taiwanese adolescents for this study. The total sample was divided into two groups; Sample 1 was used for an exploratory factor analysis to construct models, and Sample 2 was used for a confirmatory factor analysis to validate the applicability of the models. We proposed the final model of moral disengagement, comprising the following five factors: moral justification, falsification and comparison of behavior, obscuring causal agency, distorting consequences, and blaming and devaluating victims. Structural equation modeling of gender and moral disengagement revealed that the boys exhibited higher overall moral disengagement, falsification and comparison of behavior, distorting consequences, and blaming and devaluating victims compared with the girls. |
