The aim of this research is to investigate the psychological mechanism that exists between authoritarian leadership and compliance. Data collected from 330 paired samples of supervisors and subordinates, suggested a partial mediation of job- focused impression on authoritarian leadership and subordinates compliance. The moderation effect of work motivation was found between authoritarian leadership and subordinates job-focused impression management. Furthermore, a moderated mediation effect was also proved in this research, individuals whose work motivation is more internalized are more likely to express job-focused impression management when faced with an authoritarian leader, and then the leader would feel the subordinate is more compliant. Implications for theories and research from this research are also discussed.
