Background: Melancholy mood can affect labor productivity, unemployment, and workplace relationships, among other factors. Thus, this study intended to find the prevalence and demographic risk factors for depression among high-tech workers in Southern Taiwan. Methods: Using a cross-sectional study, we collected a questionnaire from a group of high-tech factory workers in southern Taiwan during their annual physical examinations (January 2012 to December 2012). Data included demographic data, lifestyle habits, bady mass index (BMI), and the Taiwanese Depression Scale (TDS). SPSS statistical software was used to analyze risk factors for depression. Results: After adjustment for sex, age, education, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, BMI, exercise habits, and other variables, logistic regression analysis showed that women [adjusted odds ratio(AOR)=3.00] and younger age (≤30 years old, AOR=1.69) are independent risk factors for depression among incoming high-tech workers. Conclusions: Young female incoming high-tech workers had a higher risk for depression. Thus, more attention and earlier psychological support may be necessary for this population to treat this condition. |
