University libraries are facing challenges in collection development due to shrinking budgets, the rising costs of materials, and the growth of electronic resources. Several methods of preserving collection development include reducing expenditures for monographs, canceling print periodical subscriptions, enhancing interlibrary loan and document delivery services, participating in library consortia, and establishing cooperative collection development programs. This paper cites related statistics data to discuss these methods. The paper also indicates that certain solutions may bring about new problems. Librarians need to rethink these issues in terms of ownership and access. In addition, librarians should not neglect the responsibility of selection, which makes up the core work of collection development. Thorough knowledge of the collection demonstrates the expertise and specialization of the librarian profession. |
