At that department of Japanese ,placement teare administeredoncea year to college freshmen after enroll mentinorder to place the min classes appropriate to their proficiency levels. This report presents the results of the placement tests and the changes in as well as distributions of the test takers'scores across five years. It is discovered that the average scores in the placement tests a dministereddeon strated a declining trend along with a wide variation in freshmen's Japanese competence.A particularly prominent feature is that freshmen's test performance showed an M-shape distributions of the test scores in the placement tests. However, the above observed phenomen a may be affected by factors such as the number of students, students'backgrounds, different qualifications for a dmission, and the environments where the placement tests we read ministered. For example, native Japanese taking the placement tests and an increasing number of non - Japanese majors due to changing qualifications for university admission may all have influenced greatly the results ofthe placeenttests. Thus, the findings presented here can not be simply generalized. |
