Cross-strait relations are not only bilateral but have become regional and global concerns. In this interview, former Chairperson of the Mainland Affairs Council, Dr. Tsai, Ing-wen, takes a rare moment to share with readers her experiences and insights on managing cross-strait relations in a fluid international environment. With the easing of restrictions on cross-strait travels and exchanges since the late 1980s, Taiwan's WTO membership, and the two democratic presidential elections held on the island in 2000 and 2004, not only have new cross-strait issues emerged but the complexity of the issues has also increased. Finding the right policies to suit the social changes, trade and economic relations, and managing the trilateral Taiwan-US-PRC relations have become challenges in a rapidly changing society. Moreover, some key questions, such as how Taiwan should look ahead, to prepare itself for the future, to find ways to maintain Taiwan's relevance to the global community and how China research resources should be positioned to forestall the challenges that lie ahead of us, will become indispensable to be concerned.
