This study adopted a historical research method, and the time frame of this study was set from the establishment of the Taipei YMCA to the retirement of Director-General Chung, Chi-An (鍾啟安) in 1985. Historical documents were collected and reviewed to understand the development of Taipei YMCA physical education programs as well as to uncover its influence on sports and physical education in Taiwan. Results found that the development of Taipei YMCA physical education programs can be divided into three phases. 1. Grassroot period (1945-1951): Despite physical education programs that were already established at the time, due to the lack of appropriate venues, sports activities were yet to be implemented in this period. 2. Badminton and basketball promotion period (1951-1963): Providing assistance for the military in promoting the sport of badminton and basketball. Taipei YMCA also helped to host different competitions and exhibition games and establish sports classes to attract more participants. 3. Swimming and early childhood physical education promotion period (1964-1985): The organization introduced swimming and physical education classes for children since this period. The swimming class not only make up for the insufficient swimming hours in the school system but also provided opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in physical activities. The introduction of early childhood physical education forms the foundation of its curriculum that created a whole new field of P.E. in Taiwan. Overall, this study concluded that Taipei YMCA, with its insistence on the core philosophy of 'Not to be served, but to serve', preached the gospel and realized its idea of 'Wellness' through religious, education and physical activities. And along with its promotion of physical education program, the association had made a great contribution to the development of physical education in Taiwan. |
