Head and neck cancer patients often suffer from insomnia, pain, fatigue and mood disturbance during treatment period. Sleep disturbance causes fatigue, depression and low immune system function. Hence, this study aims to explore the relationship between fatigue and the quality of sleep in head and neck cancer patients received concurrent chemoradiotherapy. A quasi-experimental method was used in this study. The data were collected using subjective questionnaires including a personal information questionnaire, Verramn & Snyder-Halpen scale (VSH) and Taiwan general fatigue scale (TGFS). A total of 52 participants with diagnosed head and neck cancer were enrolled. Results of the study showed that a statistically significant negative relationship between fatigue and the quality of sleep (r = -0.512| p < 0.001) was found. The level of hemoglobin was positively correlated with the quality of sleep and has a statistically significant (r = 0.278| p = 0.046). Patients who had higher hemoglobin levels tend to have better quality of sleep. There was a negative relationship was found between fatigue and the levels of hemoglobin, however, no statistically significant difference between them. |
