The verso lines are the basic and important parts of bamboo slips. Appearing on the back of the bamboo manuscripts, verso lines are mostly in the shape of "", "W" and "V", including those drawn with brush and ink (mo huaxian 墨畫線) and those carved with the carving knife (ke huaxian 刻劃線). In recent years, as bamboo manuscripts have been continually discovered and published, scholars have paid more and more attention to the importance of verso lines. This paper argues that by analyzing the role of the verso lines, the research on the external features of the bamboo manuscripts can be enriched. Moreover, it also helps to reconstruct the order of the original text thus facilitates a deeper understanding of the content. |
