The purpose of this study was to compare preceptor-reported changes in the competency of nurses in a medical center during the nurses' first three years of employment. A longitudinal research design was adapted as a guide for this study. Fifty-six nurses were surveyed three months after starting employment at the medical center, and again two years and three years later. Results: A comparison of the results of the 2008 survey with those of 2006 revealed significant increases in caring, clinical, administrative, teaching, emergency, research, and overall nursing competency. A comparison of the 2008 results with those of 2007 showed that there were significant increases in caring, clinical, administrative, teaching and research skills, and overall nursing competency. Aspects of care quality such as caring, clinical, and overall nursing competency were affected by the department serviced by subject. Administrative skills were affected by the department serviced and the clinical ladder level. Teaching skills were affected by the department serviced and job position. The results of this study will be used as a reference guide to revise the nursing training program and, in the long run, to improve nursing quality. |
