This study investigates the literary and cultural meanings of the images of horses and carriages in The Book of Songs. It summarizes the formulas, intertextual comparison, and past scholars' glosses to analyze and interpret how objects and categories of horses and carriages were transformed into poetic structures through textual imagery and endowed 'themed' functions, thus becoming the important factors affecting the creation of poetry and conveyance of meanings. This study suggests that the formulas or objects mentioned in The Book of Songs were mainly associated with three motifs: 'marriage', 'battle-attending', and 'atheling'. Consequently, horses and carriages appeared in The Book of Songs can be used to express affections of 'missing someone' and 'adoration', not merely representing the meanings of original objects. |
