From my clinical experiences, family issues and harm are the major topic I have been encountered. However, I could not find any specific research targeting this theme. This study is an attempt to explore 'family harm' including its definitions, possible impacts, and endorsed meanings from the college-level participants. This study was conducted via semi-interview and the researcher recruited 12 college and graduate students into the study. The results show that(1) the types of family harm include inadequate parenting, parental discord, violent father, violent family or extended family's over involvement, tyrant or unreasonable father, father's indulgence in his own hobby, father's differential treatment, mother's emotional scapegoat, and tyrant mother;(2)the impacts on the participants include: intimate relationships, perspectives on gender issues, lacking self-concept, distrust to others or loneliness, eager to earn other's trust or understanding, appreciating mother's hardworking, confusing about interpersonal relationship and life, enforced grow-up, and emotional disturbance; (3) the meanings for family harm are: understanding the causes behind father's behavior, self reflection and making changes, regarding the experiences as growth or resources, and discipline. |
