The Teochew community in Parit Jawa fishing village of Johor Malaysia consists of descendants from Jieyang, Chenghai and Chaoan. Over more than a century of dialect mixing, the Teochew dialect of Parit Jawa developed a common dialectal tonal system. One unique characteristic of this tonal system is the tone sandhi of the Yin Shang tone. At the lexical level, Yin Shang tone being at the hind syllable will exhibit two different tonal values, that is, when the front syllable holds a high-declining or mid-rising tone it reads [21]; when the front syllable holds a low-declining or mid-levelling tone it reads [53]. As such, the end result is a dissimilation effect in its tone sandhi pattern. |
