This paper, focusing on field work and statistics, deals with speakers' attitudes towards Hakka sub-dialects in Tao-yuan, Hsin-chu, and Miao-li counties all in Taiwan. Those surveyed were asked to describe sub-dialects with the following properties: pleasant sounding, sounding like a song, sounding like quarrelling, sounding soft, and sounding heavy. In this paper I offer the ‘My way sounds the best' hypothesis to describe speakers' attitudes towards Hakka sub-dialects. |
