The Chau-an Hakka dialect explored in this paper refers to the Hakka dialect spoken in Lun-pei Hsiang, Yun-lin County. The main phonetic features of this dialect are examined based on the investigation, Extensive comparison also has been made with other Hakka dialects which include Toufen, Liou-duei, Ju-dung, Hsin-wu,Yung-ting, Jau-ping, Tungshy, Chang-le, Feng-shun, Wu-ping etc. From the observation, interesting phonological and lexical variations are found in the dialect and they are due to the influence of the commonly used Southern Min dialect as well as Mandarin after a long period of language contact. Several examples have been concluded from these variations in order to give a clearer picture on how the phonetic changes took place. |
