In October 2009, Indonesian batik craft has officially been recognized by the UNESCO to be the world intangible cultural heritage. This is due to the fact that Indonesian batik craft having gone through the long history, possesses the refined quality in terms of design and workmanship, has the wide range of cultural motif interpretation. Indonesian batik culture is not the pure culture of one origin. For an instance, among many Indonesian islands, Java is known to be the oldest batik production area. Long period of political changes in the history has brought about the significant impact on the Javanese batik culture. In the process of adapting to the cultures of foreign ethnics, the Javanese batik reflects themingling of cultures of the different nations. Tracing the motif design, people will find the formation of the Javanese batik motif came from the influence of the cultures of various parts of the world. Centuries ago, the foreigners who came either for religion mission, trading, or colonizing had brought along their own cultures which left the marks on the Javanese batik design, contributed to the development of the national batik design. In this analysis, the author will highlight two significance of the study: to reveal the iconic symbol of the Javanese classicbatik motif, and the formation of the batik motif in the coastal areas during the era of Dutch colonization. The elements of the analysis for the batik design include: the element of motif, color and layout of traditional Javanese batik design which including the pattern and or arrangement of the design. |
