The National Central Library (referred in short as NCL) has a collection of 162 Dunhuang documents, which is the most abundant collection of Dunhuang literature in Taiwan. Most of these Dunhuang documents were purchased at the end of the AntiJapanese War and after the war. The age of the literature is ranging from the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, more than one-fifth of them were ancient scriptures before the Tang Dynasty. In terms of the length of the scrolls, there are a total of 24 long scrolls of 800 centimeters, and many of them have been modernly mounted. Among them, there are famous annotations and seals, which is quite valuable. The NCL's collections of Dunhuang literature are mainly manuscripts, with a total of 207 documents, of which 87 are unique and very precious. In 2018, the project of Restoration and Conservation of the National Treasures and Dunhuang Literature of the National Central Library" received the subsidy from the Ministry of Culture. The NCL therefore cooperated with the ''Handmade Paper and Paper Restoration Laboratory'' of the Taiwan Forestry Research Institute to conduct an examination and scientific analysis of 39 unrepaired Dunhuang documents. According to the results of the scientific analysis, a special paper for restoration was produced. This article introduces the implementation process of the project and shares the experience. |
