This paper's purpose is to review the relevant studies about children with preterm birth and their cognitive function status, and likewise examines the effects of physical activity on cognitive functions in children with preterm birth. The results of the review show that children with preterm birth display diminished performances, including measurements of cognitive functions, executive functions, and intelligence performances, as compared to the results of normal children. In addition, previous studies have shown a positive relationship between physical activity and cognitive functions in normal and special populations. These positive effects also extend to children with preterm birth. For instance, studies show that children with higher exercise capacity are associated with greater cognitive function performances. Recently, studies have also provided further evidence that acute exercise facilitates executive functions in children with preterm birth. The determining of conclusions regarding these issues still remains in the beginning stages, and the hope is that this review will provide significant references for follow-up studies. |
