Instead of trying to predict a response from a stimulus alone or from a stimulus and organismic variable alone, the present formulation attempts to predict a response to a test stimulus when the relationship between the original stimulus and the response is known, or to predict a response to a stimulus under a different condition affecting the response output, when the given stimulus-response relationship der a standard condition is known. It was shown that this approach is quite powerful in encompassing almost all known effects of important variables in classical conditioning. Additionally, by delineating the pure UCS intensity effect separately from the other UCS intensity effect and the UCR magnitude effect, the present formulation makes some predictions which superficially appear to be contradictory. All predictions are in line with available empirical facts. |
