Among Taiwan's popular literary magazines, Mystery Magazine is a unique presence, having published a total of 282 issues over a period of 23 and a half years. On the one hand, as an advocate, it strove through its own expertise to promote a sub-field which could be classified as mystery fiction, leading to the creation of an era. On the other hand, whether intentionally or not, it also sealed the mark of the times, demonstrating that the publication of a magazine and its trajectory is determined through a combination of internal and external factors. This study discusses the strategies of popular literary magazines and the potential reactions of readers through a quantitative analysis using charts and numerical data, the combing of editing routes and an examination of magazines' orientations. From three aspects - namely, the selection of fictional works, the analysis of professional articles, and the analysis of other articles - it is clear that Mystery Magazine's professional image had been hindered due to multiple factors, such as the 612 Expiration Day, internal problems of the magazine publisher, and political anxiety. Thus, it no longer satisfied its more-educated readers in the field and was eventually replaced by other publishers and forms of media, attesting to the end of an era. |
