Kulangsu, also known as the 'Island of Music', covers an area of only 1.87 square kilometers. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the collision era of foreign cultures and local culture, Kulangsu presented a beautiful gathering of multiculture, such as music, architecture, immigrant and religion. On the other hand, Lieyu, which is adjacent to Kulangsu, was selected as one of the 30 Classic Towns in the '2019 Classic-Town Ticketing Event' held by the Tourism Bureau, MOTC. These two islands share common language and common culture, but each has unique tourism resources and tourism policies. How can they escape the geographical and area restrictions to develop their unique island tourism? Comparative research is adopted in the study to probe the historical resources, natural environment, tourism policies and issues faced while developing island tourism. Concrete suggestions for the development of Lieyu and Kulangsu are also provided to follow-up researchers and government authorities. |
