The brutality of Tingzhang is one of dimension to demonstrate the darkness and violence inside the politics of Ming Dynasty. Not only official documents imply tyrannical top-down relationship between emperors and courtiers, but also the writings of physical experience by those courtiers who were tortured can provide researcher oppertunities to study in differnet perspectives of Tingzhang. Among the writings, Yang Jisheng's Zishu Nianpu the works showing in detail about the process of imprisonment as well as the treatment for his wounds. This article focuses on Yang Jisheng's Zishu Nianpu, in order to explore three things. First is about his imprisonment and the medication after flogging. The second part will be the preparations before flogging, the physical experiences, and the writings of his physical sufferings. Third, based on the discussions above, is to investigate the meanings of bodies which are displayed in the works. Through Yang's writings, an “honor world” of identity with the flogged courtiers and “the culture of Tingzhang” could be discovered. |
