In order to circumvent the paucity of sources this paper, assuming continuity between the respective dynasties, attempts to interpret Han legal history based on a comparison with later materials stemming from the Song period. In the case at hand, Han laws prohibiting gambling are examined and interpreted against the backdrop of like policies enacted during the Southern Song. The similarities of the laws in regard to content as well as social and political factors enable us to argue for the existence of corresponding policies during the Han dynasty. |
