In this paper, Iidesu with a rapid falling intonation which starts at a high level are put into one category, and analyzed as expressions which carry out a speaker's negative intention. Iidesu have two meanings. One is to express that it is not necessary to do so, and the other is to express that a speaker has no intention to do so. Iidesu have the following four functions. At first, a speaker can refuse to the invitation or request from others using Iidesu. Secondly, a speaker can express that he or she has no intention to do so toward the matter which is going to happen in the near future when he or she is asked about his or her intention. Thirdly, a speaker can restrain listener's action or words just before speaker' presence with Iidesu. Fourthly, a speaker can make corrections toward his or her words which have been just said or happened with Iidesu. |
