Akutagawa Ryūnosuke published his short story “The Christ in Nanking” on Chuōkoron July 1920. At the last part of the story, the writer claims that he owes very much to “A Night in Qinhuai” by Tanizaki Jun!ichiro in creating his own work. This explanation by the author himself, however, was a kind of camouflage for the real material. Actually, Akutagawa depended on “St. Julian ” by Gustave Flaubert. |
