Although the quality of architectural design strongly relies on its thorough integration with structural systems, design of architecture and design of structures are typically taught separately, and often at different university departments. This paper reports on a course entitled ”Structure and Form Design”, in which the integration of subjects was taught as a dialogue between architecture and engineering viewpoint. Several observations on this approach to teaching are reported and discussed, based on field observation data collected throughout the course over one semester. These include: differences between architectural and engineering approaches to structural design, structural design teaching in a studio setting, changed roles of teachers and students in this educational approach, the use of presentation materials in tutorials and new points of departure for developing future teaching in this field.
