This study was designed to investigate on materials, types, number, and height of platform chair in Taipei Rapid Transit System and to examine the difference between two levels of leg strength and chair’s fitness for sit-to-stand. Field research was used to measure on Taipei Rapid Transit System’s platform chairs. Then, twenty-four older female adult participants were requested to execute chair stand test and to judge chair’s fitness of three chair heights and with or without armrest. The independent variables were leg strength and conditions of chairs. The results of the first study showed that none of platform chairs had armrests, and most of them were made by stone (average height: 43.3±2.6 cm). The results of the second study revealed that two groups were both significant higher in the conditions of higher chair height and with armrests in pre-trial, and so did high leg strength’s group in post-trial. In chair conditions, high leg strength’s group was found significant higher than low leg strength’s group in both pre-trial and post-trial. In conclusion, Taipei Rapid Transit System’s platform chairs did not have armrests and much lower for older adults. Besides, older adult’s subjective fitness for sit-to-stand varied due to different leg strength. |
