This study examined what rapists think the causes and psychologies are for forcible sexual intercourse. Their reports were compared with theories on sexual aggression. Structured interviews were used to collect data and a model that explains forcible sexual intercourse was established from the rapists' narratives. Sixteen convicted rapists were interviewed individually. The participants revealed the general and specific crime factors for forcible sexual intercourse. Although forcible sexual intercourse shares common factors with other crimes, it has specific influence factors. The results also revealed that an external attribution tendency, especially drinking, was significant in the interviewees' narratives. Overall, the interviewees' narratives were consistent with theoretical discourse. The proposed model revealed that participants' distorted beliefs, negative emotions, and sexual desires interacted and led to the incidents of forcible sexual intercourse and that alcohol, drugs, pornography and low self-control were moderators. The model identified the main sources of the participants' distorted beliefs, negative emotions, and sexual desires. |
