There are more and more counseling psychologists working in hospital settings. Because the occurrences of diseases and interventions are usually quite complicated, especially in cancer and hospicewards, interdisciplinary interventionsare common. Counseling psychologists tend to have less involvement with the medical system; working in an interdisciplinary team may be challenging for counseling psychologists. The purpose of this research is to investigate the experiences of counseling psychologists when they first worked in the interdisciplinary teams in hospice wards. This study used qualitative research methods to explore their adjustment experiences by conducting in-depth interviews with 4 hospice counseling psychologists who worked in hospice team from 1 to 3 years. These interviews were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The adjustment experiences of counseling psychologists demonstrated by the results included: (1)entering the unique medical settings with cautions and pressures; (2) the sources of support: counseling psychologists relying on the guidance and support of supervisors and peers; (3) the needs of learning: the continuous development in professional enhancement and interdisciplinary collaboration; (4) formation of collaboration: adaptation with the connections with boundaries and the understanding of different professions; and (5) relocating professional identity in the interdisciplinary team. Finally, suggestions regarding education and training of counseling psychologists, interdisciplinary collaboration, and supervision are offer based on the findings. |
