The characteristics and innovations in Claude Debussy's music not only inspired the composers of his time, but also influenced the future generations. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. Many musicians, such as Pierre Boulez, consider that the modern music started with the opening flute melody of the Prélude à l'après-midi d'un Faune by Debussy. The composer assigned the very important melody to flute, and went on to write a few more beautiful and significant works for it. As flutist and researcher, I wish to discuss Debussy's innovations through his flute music, as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the composer's death. |
