Since 1999, around 123 aboriginal families who used to live in urban illegal buildings have been replaced to Community F in the Xizhi district. The Zhishan Foundation has provided on-site services for Community F for 9 years. They started with employment services, and then offered after-school childcare and adult daycare for seniors. This year (2018), they set up a service point for children and youth and also expanded the range of their services to include parent-child co-learning classes, after-school care for primary and junior high school students, and community activities for teenagers. In supporting Community F, social workers from Zhishan have actively preserved urban aboriginal culture and brought the aborigines closer to their own culture. This article is based on the reflection of Zhishan social workers who supported Community F by summarizing their observations of these children and youth, by analyzing their service strategies, and by connecting their experiences in helping these children to their own life. |
