As kin becomes a formal out-of-home placement resource for children and youth, it has also become increasingly important to gain understanding of kinship care placement carers. This study has collected 163 surveys in order to understand the demographics of the carers of kinship care placement and explore the connection between their demographic features and fostering competency. Whether providing allowance has a strengthening or weakening effect on the relation between the kin's demographic features and fostering competency is also analyzed. This study has found that kinship carers are generally of older age and with a lower level of education, as well as lower personal income and total family income. These features have an effect on their fostering competency. Furthermore, there are more female carers than male carers, and the fostering competency of the female carers are better than their counterparters. This study has also found that the provision of allowance can moderate the gap between differences in fostering competency due to the kin's age, education level and personal income. This study recommends that more customized services should be developed in order to meet the needs of the kinship carers, and providing these carers with allowance should be encouraged. |
