Dong Zhen-qing, the author of Zhouyi Huitong is a famous scholar of Yi Jing studies in the Yuan Dynasty. Dong held different views of Yi Jing in the Song Dynasty. In his careful examination of the Yi Jing studies of the past dynasties, he discovered that Cheng and Zhu's writings on Yi Jing are crucial and pointed out the significant issues they brought out, especially how to divide the Confucian canon and how to develop a thorough understanding (huitong) of the meaning and the image divination. This article focuses on Dong's concept of huitong, his systematic commentary on Yi Jing studies of the past dynasties, his interpretation of Zhu and Hu's graphics of Yi Jing and their explanations, as well as Dong's ways of huitong Cheng and Zhu's study of Yi Jing in terms of the format. The contribution of Dong, whose writings may not have provided new interpretations of Yi Jing or new views on Yi Jing studies, lies in his engagement with the important issues raised by Yi Jing studies of the Song and Yuan Dynasty and his reflections on the issues of methodology.
