Including 33 short stories, Selected Novels of Modern Literature was selected by Ou-yang Tzu, the mainstay of Modern Literature, from 206 short stories of the periodical (no.1-51, 1960-1973). According to the standard of modernism, Ou-yang selected the stories, and gave every story a New-Criticism-style introduction. The selected works are more avant-garde than those in the pioneering stage of Literature Magazine, and more creative than those after Modern Literature resumed publication in 1977. Ou-yang selected only one story per writer, no matter the writer was prolific or not. This anthology can yet be regarded as a model of modern short stories in Taiwan. It highlights the characteristics of modernism. We are going to discuss the questions from three aspects: 1. Many stories echo the topic of existentialism. 2. Those stories pay great attention to the description of psychology. 3. The writers try hard to perfect their skill, and polish their writing. |
