Professor John Charles Alderson has been an influential figure in the advancement of language testing for more than three decades, particularly in Europe. He has been a professor of Linguistics and English Language Education at Lancaster University, UK for the past 30 years. Professor Alderson’s accomplishments are multi-faceted. Besides teaching and supervising postgraduate students, he has conducted many projects involving school teachers and has assisted numerous countries in revising their language testing systems. In addition, he played a key role in the EU-funded DIALANG project, a web-based diagnostic test of 14 foreign languages. In recent years, he has led a funded research project Diagnosing Reading Proficiency in a Second or Foreign Language and initiated the creation of the European Association for Language Testing and Assessment (EALTA). Professor Alderson has contributed to many valuable publications that have advanced the field of languages testing. He co-edited the Cambridge Language Assessment series with Professor Lyle Bachman, is co-author of Language Test Construction and Evaluation (Alderson, Clapham, & Wall, 1995) and author of Assessing Reading (2000). His most recent book is The Politics of Language Education: Individuals and Institutions, which was published by Multilingual Matters in 2009. Because of his many contributions over the years, Professor Alderson received the ILTA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. |
