The problem of master surgery schedule involves the decision makingon allocating physicians’ surgeries to the defined time shifts. It is prevalentthat some elective patients are blocked because of lacking of bed spaceand the bed imbalance among departments is quite common in many hospitalsin Taiwan. The main objective of this paper is to minimize the numberof empty beds, accompanied with subsidiary objectives including heavysurgeries prioritized and physicians’ preferred shifts. We developed a two- stage approach to solve the problem. In the first stage each individualdepartment aims to independently find its master surgery schedule, and inthe second stage, a borrowing measure among departments is carried outproviding the measure is permitted. We show that the approach can solveproblems having 50 physician and 200 beds for each department within 20seconds. |
