Elizabethkingia spp. exists in various hospital environments and this hasbeen an emerging issue because of the multidrug resistance of these organismsand the associated high mortality rate. Three main species can cause infectionin humans, namely E. meningoseptica, E. anopheles, and E. miricola, whichshare some clinical characteristics. Most of them infect patients with prolongedhospitalization, broad-spectrum antibiotic use, admission to the intensivecare unit, ventilator use, immunocompromised status, and comorbidities.Elizabethkingia spp. can cause many kinds of infection in patients, althoughmost cases reported were of bacteremia or pneumonia and can be treatedwith TMP-SMX, rifampin, or piperacillin-tazobactam. Contact is the main routeof nosocomial spreading, and implementing the policy of infection control, including environmental cleaning, hand washing, and contact isolation, is theonly way to prevent an outbreak. |
