This project is a “from indoor to outdoor, then return to museum” educational activity to deliver the knowledge of evolutionary biology by bringing students of high school to the Tsailiao River, Chochen Hill, Tainan, from the traditional classroom or lab. The young students can totally experience fossil collecting in the field, learn the basic skill in fossil's identification, and finally take fossils into museums to be national treasures by a series of sorting, classification and cataloging processes. Firstly, we organized three scientific educational camps in Taichung, Taipei and Kaohsiung, respectively, and invite several students for one whole day activity. The students can acquire basic knowledge in biology, geology, comparative anatomy and collection conservation, to broaden their scientific views in the paleobiological study from museums. Then, we leaded some potential studies from each camp to the filed, Tsailiao River, to practice fossil collecting by experience learning. The fossils they recovered will be taken into museum's collection. The students can learn and practice how the work likes a museum staff to have a field collection into museum's storage. Based on the “Summative evaluation” on the “Generic Learning Outcomes” by the questionnaire survey from attendants, most students gave highly affirmation on the program. They had fruitful acquirement from the activities. |
