The Victory Match Manufacturing Ltd. is the last match manufacturer in Taiwan. Its remaining artifacts and archives were donated to the museum which included two matchstick arraying machines, three certificates of the trademark “Monkey”, some types of match products, pictures of factory and operating machines, drafted printouts, etc. This study discussed the growth and decline of the match industry in Taiwan and the historical values of these collected artifacts. From elaborating the potential cultural values of matches, common past memories were awakened and some helpful findings for the museum were also found as followed: 1. The technology of making matches was successfully recorded. The procedures of operating arraying match sticks machines had been recorded as future resources for exhibiting match industry which can help to create an enjoyable environment for visitors to explore its history. 2. The special characteristics of the history of Taiwan's match industry were found. The history of Taiwan's match industry has seventy years. It started from the first match factory, established at Taichung, to last one, Victory Match manufacturing Factory. The factory owners came from some different backgrounds. 3. The significance of the match collections was identified. The match collections from the Victory Match Manufacturing Factory witnessed the technology of making matches in various periods. 4. The special cultural properties of matches were found. There were many various types of pictures and designs for match boxes. Some of them were with different monkey trademarks used to light a fire. Besides the purpose of burning, many match boxes were used for advertising by using designs of folk colors, fine arts and traditional styles. They reflected our real lives in the past time. |
