「展示」可說是現今博物館的基本功能，但開始具備「展示」的觀念卻是博物館之所以可以稱為博物館的重要原因之一。最早人類對於「物件」產生強烈的興趣，乃至於進而引起收集的行為是為收藏的起源。收藏可以說是一種天性的表現，但收藏畢竟是一種個人私密性的活動，當收藏者基於某種原因企圖展現一己的收藏與他人共同分享欣賞時，收藏的行為才能轉化為展示的型態。在博物館的功能中，「收藏」與「展示」同樣是立基於「物」，但展示可以是收藏方式的一種，收藏卻不能達到展示的目的。

Among a museum's functions, both 'collection' and 'exhibition' are based on 'objects.' However, while exhibition can be a form of collecting, collecting cannot achieve the same objectives as exhibition. Exhibitions differ in appearance depending on their aims and objectives. What attracts people to museum exhibits is the way that, on the basis of the principles of collection or the concepts that the museum is attempting to present to public, the exhibition is transformed into a channel of communication with the public, which includes educational effects. Museum exhibition is knowledge, but also an art. When the exhibits finally appears before the eyes of visitors to the museum, this is actually only the final stage in a long, thorough process of design and consideration.
