Purpose: The main purpose of this study were to analyze the relationship among social physique anxiety, peer relationship and physical activities of adolescent girls in high school, and to explore the impact of peer relationship on social physique anxiety predicted physical activity. Method: Using convenience sampling, two high school 11-12 grades female students (n=201, average age 16.03 ± 0.69 years) in southern participated for the study. The participants completed the measurements about social physique anxiety scale (SPAS), adolescent peer relationship scale and Godin leisure-time exercise questionnaire in their class. Using descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation and multiple hierarchical regression to analysis data. Results: 1. Social physique anxiety was significantly negative correlations with peer relationship and physical activity; and peer relationship was significant positive correlation with physical activity. 2. Social physique anxiety could significantly predict peer relationship and physical activity; peer relationship also could predict physical activity. 3. Peer relationship had mediation effect in social physique anxiety affect physical activity for female adolescents. Conclusion: Female adolescents who higher social physique anxiety have poor physical activity. The main reason may be the high social physique anxiety incited low peer relationship and then declined physical activity. Suggestion: The results of this study have a value for practical application and future research. It provides related counseling strategies to teachers for high school adolescent girls who has social physique anxiety. In the future, teachers could encourage female students to engage in physical activity through peer support. |
