Centered on an account book of a Singapore overseas Chinese Wu Shencai(1912-1948) and a trading diary of his father Wu Faxiang, this paper discusses interactive relationships between Singapore Hakka of Dabu County and their home village in China. In addition to the records of Wu Shencai’s donation to Char Yong Association and Char Yong Lizhi She in Singapore, the Account Book and Trading Diary record details of the frequency and the amount of money and quantity of goods which were sent back to hometown each year by Wu Shencai, the names of “Shuike”, the cost of travels, and the amount of donation to schools, construction of bridges and “Zuofu” in the native place. This study provideds a specific case to understand the interaction between Singapore Hakka People of Dabu County and their native place in China during the Republican period. |
