Due to the effect of cold current in January of 2016 in Taiwan, severe low temperature caused a wide range of damage on landscape plants by chilling. In this study, different intensity of pruning methods were utilized to investigate the effect of growth and recovery time on landscape plants chilling injury. By comparison of the experimental and control groups, different indexes including “greenery coverage rate”, “greenery coverage of single plant” and “growth vigor” were applied for statistical analysis and significant test. There are no significant differences in all indexes found in Society Garlic, Lemon Lime and Bojers Spurge plants after pruning. The results indicated these plants can be replantd directly after chilling injury. However, in Greeping Charley, Song of India and Croton plants, the statistically significant differences were observed. The pruning Greeping Charley and Croton showed the higher scores on “greenery coverage of single plant” than the control groups. This demonstrated the growth potential can be restored by pruning after chilling injury. On the contrary, the Song of India showed higher restored ability in the control group, therefore, it can be recovered without pruning. The “greenery coverage rate” and “growth vigor” of Compacta and Shortleaf Lilyturf species also showed significant differences after pruning. Both “greenery coverage rate” and “growth vigor” indexes were decrease when Compacta and Shortleaf Lilyturf plants were pruned. The outcomes of this study exhibited restoration degree of various landscape plants after chilling injury and will facilitate their maintenance management in the future. |
