The Formation of Modern Design Thought and Its Value: Functionalism, Rationalism and Machine Aesthetic

現代主義設計思想的形成，是一個循序漸進又複雜多變的過程。其蘊含的設計哲理，對當下的設計界仍有舉足輕重的影響。回顧歷史，這其中既有從手工藝時期進入機器時代所產生的迷茫與激辯，也有設計中形式與功能權重的博弈；標準化設計觀的提出，讓設計真正意義上開始進入到量產階段；此外，誠實的設計，無論在當時還是現在，都值得每一個設計師反思。在現代設計發展150餘年後的今天，重新審視其思想形成的軌跡，有助於我們更好地理解設計，更好地發揚設計的價值。

The development of modern design concept was a gradual, complicated and changeable process. Its design philosophy still has a significant influence on the current design community. Looking back on its history, we find that there was not only confusion and argument generated by the transition from handicraft period into the machine era, but also the debate on the balance between form and function. The proposal of standardized design concept symbolized the beginning of mass production era. In addition, the view of honest design should be reflected by every designer, past or contemporary. Today, after more than 150 years’ evolution of modern design, a review of the historical formation of its ideas will help us to better comprehend the definition of design, and enhance the value of the design.
