Tang Dynasty Tower Canisters Excavated in Wuzhong, Ningxia: A Preliminary Study A funerary device called a tower canister has been found in tombs dating to the Tang Dynasty. However, because no records about tower canisters exist in the literature, the function of such canisters in the funeral customs of the Tang Dynasty remains unclear. Currently, tower canisters from the Tang Dynasty continue to be excavated in the northern region of Central China. In 2003, during infrastructure construction, 120 tombs were unearthed in Wuzhong, Ningxia, revealing numerous tower canisters. In this study, the tower canisters excavated from Wuzhong were examined. In particular, the funeral systems, ornamentation patterns on the canisters, and information related to funerals and tombs were investigated to identify the cultural origins of tower canister use by the people of Wuzhong during the Tang Dynasty. |
